My buddy died in his sleep from this (sleep apnea) at the age of 24, he used a cpap machine but it annoyed him to wear it when he sleeps so he stopped using it and paid the ultimate price for it. Hopefully your buddy doesn't have it because that is a shitty way to go.

I hope he saw a Doctor about this and had a sleep study. This looks like obstructive sleep apnea which can lead to death. He obstructs his airway while he sleeps and his body is going through the motions to "breathe" but he can't get air because his airway is obstructed. The oxygen levels in his body drop suddenly as the struggle continues and then finally he manages to get brief period of snored breaths all while asleep. There is a machine he can wear at night to prevent this dangerous breathing pattern. People die in their sleep from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). All hospitals screen for OSA with questions during hospital stays as it has become recognized especially with obesity being so prevalent.
